The money Umar Kremlev spent on Donald Trump Jr’s May wedding celebrations is back in the news after an Oct. 27, 2026 Financial Times investigation placed the two men at the same Mongolian hunting camp in August. Six weeks on from ProPublica’s first report, the central question about the Kremlev wedding payments, whether they were really paid back, still rests on the word of two people.
Where it stands: As of Oct. 28, neither Trump Jr, the White House nor Kremlev had released an amount, a date or a document showing repayment. On Oct. 5, Snopes said the claim “remains unproven.” Kremlev did not respond to the FT’s latest requests for comment.
Trump Jr’s spokesperson did not dispute the payments when ProPublica asked, saying, “Umar is a personal friend of Don,” and that Kremlev is “not someone he has a business relationship with.” The president later said his son repaid Kremlev, and Kremlev has said the same.
What did ProPublica report about the Kremlev wedding payments?
ProPublica reported on Sept. 14 that Kremlev covered “hundreds of thousands of dollars of wedding expenses,” based on records it reviewed and three people familiar with the event. It said the money moved through a Dubai entity tied to the boxing body, IB Challenger.
The timing matters. ProPublica said the couple, Trump Jr and Bettina Anderson, married on a private Bahamas island on Friday, May 22, at a ceremony Trump Jr’s spokesperson said had 18 guests and that Kremlev did not attend. Kremlev paid for the Saturday party on that island and rented a second island for the Sunday reception, according to the outlet.
No final bill has been published. ProPublica offered two reference points: the second island “can rent for around $100,000 a night,” and the fireworks company “charges around $70,000 for such shows.” Totals cited elsewhere are estimates, not confirmed figures.
Kremlev’s press office said the IBA itself paid nothing toward the wedding. It did not address the Dubai payments, ProPublica reported.
How did the couple and the White House respond?
The couple confirmed the gift and played it down. Anderson wrote on Instagram, as quoted by ABC News, that it was “an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend,” adding, “NO CONSPIRACY, NO MYSTERY.”
President Trump’s first answer went further. On Sept. 14 he said, “I have no idea who Umar is, never heard of him,” and argued Kremlev had not paid for the wedding but for an “afterparty,” calling it “Not a big deal!” The next day, Attorney General Todd Blanche asked reporters, “Am I investigating what?” and suggested an investigation was unlikely, ABC reported.
Four days later the account shifted. In the Oval Office on Sept. 18, the president told reporters, “as I understand it, he paid them back,” and recalled his son telling him, “I’m paying him back, Dad,” the AP reported. He also said accepting the gift was allowed.
Is there proof Trump Jr repaid Kremlev?
No public proof has surfaced. Repayment rests on two statements: the president’s, given secondhand, and Kremlev’s own.
Speaking to reporters in Istanbul on Oct. 6, Kremlev said, “He did repay the money I spent on the present,” and added that he found it unnecessary, asking whether a host would “issue an invoice” to guests at his country house, according to the AP.
ABC News said it had requested proof of repayment from both the Trump Organization and the White House. Snopes, which said it could not independently verify what Kremlev paid for, described the repayment claim as unproven. The table shows how the accounts unfolded.
| Date (2026) | Who | What was said about payment |
|---|---|---|
| Sept. 14 | Trump Jr’s spokesperson | Did not dispute the payments (ProPublica) |
| Mid-Sept. | Bettina Anderson | A “wedding gift from a friend” |
| Sept. 14 | President Trump | Said Kremlev did not pay for the wedding itself |
| Sept. 18 | President Trump | Said his son repaid Kremlev |
| Oct. 5 | Snopes | Repayment claim “remains unproven” |
| Oct. 6 | Umar Kremlev | Said he was repaid, and did not want to be |
Two outstanding questions remain open in the record: how much was repaid, and when. Neither has been answered publicly.

Why did the payments draw scrutiny?
Kremlev’s profile drove the concern. The FT and ProPublica have reported that he has ties to Russia’s security establishment and, citing leaked or reported records, a past conviction; his press office says he has “a completely clean legal record.” More background is in our profile of Umar Kremlev.
ProPublica also noted it was “not clear why Kremlev helped pay” and that, by a Forbes estimate it cited, Trump Jr’s net worth is about $300 million. Former FBI counterintelligence official Frank Montoya Jr. told the outlet, “If I’m paying for your wedding, at some point, you’re going to owe me something.”
That is a warning about how influence can work, not evidence of any arrangement. ProPublica’s reporters have said they have “no specific evidence that Kremlev is operating on behalf of, like, the Russian security services.” Trump Jr’s side says the friendship grew out of boxing and the outdoors.
What have lawmakers asked about the wedding?
Democrats opened a records request the day the story broke, and one Republican senator later joined the call for an inquiry. Neither has produced a hearing.
Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on House Oversight, wrote to Trump Jr on Sept. 14 that the revelations “may be the most serious allegation against you to date.” His letter sought, among other things, “The financial records of all purchases made for your wedding by foreign nationals and others on your behalf, including the amount paid,” with a deadline of Sept. 28. Whether Trump Jr replied has not been reported.
Sen. John Curtis, R-Utah, said in a video that the after-party “just stinks. It’s corruption. I don’t like it,” the AP reported, and in late September asked the Senate Judiciary Committee to investigate. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, pushed back in a statement reported by the Deseret News, saying there is “no evidence that Don has ever sold access to the President, abused his relationship on behalf of his business partners, or broken any law.” The full record of reactions, including Republicans who defended Trump Jr, is in our report on what Congress has said.
The FT’s Mongolia report adds a new data point to that record: it places the two men together again about three months after the wedding, in a remote camp in Uvs province. The full FT account is here.
